North of Leiden

The next morning we cycled the short distance into the old town. Fantastic!! It is another Venice with the whole town criss crossed by canals and many old buildings and bridges with floating café’s  and – can you believe it – we took a boat trip around the old city. Well worth it.

The old city gate was sold to a man to turn into a restaurant on the understanding that the gate would be restored and kept in good condition. It is. Also in the centre of the town there is a collection of old classic working barges which is a great attraction for tourists. These barges only pay one quarter of the normal rate so long as they are kept in good condition for the attraction. Wonder when officials in the UK will get as sensible.

After that marvelous town we moved out to a lake just to the North where we anchored. Most of it is only about 2.5 meters deep and the locals use the whole area extensively, sailing, motoring and swimming even though the water is a rich brown color.

 One sunset there was fantastic.
